Unusual practice thought to help beat baby blues

03.24.10

Hi! sorry for the caps – hope you find this article interesting :-) .

To the average New Brunswicker, the practice may seem unusual, to say the least, but in many cultures around the world consuming the placenta after a baby’s birth is common.

The theory is that the placenta contains hormones that are beneficial to the mother.

After a baby’s birth, a mother’s hormone levels drop off rapidly, which is thought to cause the baby blues.

The idea behind placentophagy — eating the placenta — is that it will help balance hormone levels by re-introducing the very hormones the mother produced during pregnancy.

If the thought of serving your baby’s placenta as lunch is a bit too much for you, placenta encapsulation may be a more palatable choice.

Natalie Arsenault of Moncton is a traditional birthing attendant who also offers placenta encapsulation services.

Soon after birth Natalie dries the placenta, then grinds it up, divides it into capsules and delivers them to you.

While the use of the placenta is less common in North America, Natalie says it is used in a lot of Chinese medicine.

“It is the most absorbable source of iron,” she says. “After you have a baby, it is very important for energy, for helping with milk production and for sleeping right.”

Creating a good milk supply may be one of the most important benefits for moms who breastfeed.

“You are intaking some good nutrients,” Natalie says. “Sometimes what makes us tired is that the baby is feeding all the time and maybe he is feeding all the time because you are not producing enough milk because you are tired.”

The capsules can help stop that vicious cycle, Natalie says.

It takes hours to prepare the placenta for encapsulation.

First Natalie steams it, then she transfers it to a pan and sprinkles it with coarse sea salt, garlic, and organic rosemary, which is strictly to add a familiar flavour in case you happen to burp after taking a capsule.

She then puts it in the oven to dry at a very low heat, a process that usually takes about eight hours.

Natalie says it is important to cook the placenta on low heat in order to preserve its molecular structure.

When the placenta is completely dry, it looks much like beef jerky. Natalie then grinds it into a fine powder and fills the capsules by hand, although a new drug store that has opened locally has offered to take over that part for her as it has a machine that can do the encapsulation.

“For the whole process I tell mothers to give me a good 24 hours,” Natalie says.

Each placenta yields 100 to 200 capsules, depending on its size.

Because she is currently filling the capsules by hand, Natalie uses larger capsules than she would like and so recommends new mothers take one each day.

Ideally, though, she says one morning, noon and night would be best, and she is hoping when the pharmacy takes over the encapsulation, it will be able to use smaller capsules.

Natalie normally recommends a new mom start taking the capsules three days after her baby’s birth and continue taking them for at least two weeks.

“On day three, that is when the hormones really plummet and when you start to get weepiness or the baby blues,” she says. “That adrenalin rush, the joy of the new baby is ebbing.”

Natalie says some women notice a striking difference in their mood once they take the capsules, saying they reduced aggressiveness and the blues.

After the initial post-partum period, Natalie tells her clients to take the capsules as needed.

She says they can continue to be used for years as long as they are stored in a cool, dry place. She keeps her own in the freezer and says she still takes them from time to time.

“I take one when I feel something coming on or if I feel low or my milk supply is low,” she says.

While the encapsulation process isn’t all that difficult, it is time-consuming, which is why many women opt to have someone like Natalie do the work for them while they tend to their newborn. The service is still fairly rare, so Monctonians are quite lucky to have that option locally.

It costs about $200 to have your placenta encapsulated, but “It is a pretty small investment in your health and your sanity,” Natalie says.

“It is your safety net. Maybe you won’t have any issues with the blues, but if you do, it is a great way to cover yourself… If you do need it, it could be a lifesaver.”

Research into the benefits of using the placenta in this way has so far been limited. Natalie points out that there is no financial benefit for pharmaceutical companies, for example, to determine if there is good science behind the theory.

However, she says an American university did just win a research grant to do some work on the topic.

Natalie says the buzz word in the medical community these days is bio-identicals — hormones derived from plants that are biologically identical to the hormones found in the human body. They are usually compounded by a pharmacist to create a custom blend specifically for one individual.

Natalie says capsules and tinctures derived from the placenta are suited perfectly to that mother and to her mother, who can use the products to fight symptoms of menopause.

While any placenta would provide iron and nutrients to anyone, each woman’s hormones are different, so her own placenta is exactly the right potency for her.

Natalie says some people do just eat the placenta. She says she’s made it into a soup for clients and she knows of others who have made it into a stir fry.

“But then you have it in one or two sittings and you get a big boost, but then it is gone,” she says. “It is a little bit of a smarter game plan (to make it into capsules).”

Natalie says she’s offered the encapsulation service for about four years and estimates she has encapsulated more than 50 placentas.

She has a booth at the Moncton Market and she says more and more women seem to have heard of placenta encapsulation when she talks about it with them.

“It is becoming more and more mainstream,” she says. “Midwives are more aware of it.”

Getting the placenta at the home births Natalie attends isn’t an issue, but she says clients who have had their babies in hospital haven’t met any resistance locally when they have asked to take their placentas home.

“They package it up in a hazardous waste container and usually the father shows up here,” she says, adding sometimes one of her children or her husband answer the door and the husband, who often is wondering if his wife has lost her marbles, starts stumbling through an explanation.

“My husband just takes it and says, ‘Yes, this is the place,’” she says.

Natalie says there have been cases in the U.S. where a hospital has refused to give the mother the placenta, so while there haven’t been any issues in Canada, she says she usually advises clients to ask for it without going into too much detail about why they want it.

Some people do request the placenta for other reasons. Some bury it, for example. In many cultures, there are rituals surrounding the disposal of the placenta, which is viewed with honour.

Because the placenta is, essentially, a meat product, it needs to be treated as such and kept refrigerated until it is prepared.

C-section scars can cause hip, back or shoulder pain!

03.17.10

Many women today are having c-sections for a variety of reasons. The incision is deep and takes 6-8 weeks to heal on average and sometimes longer. The scar from a c-section, because the incision was through many layers of soft tissue in the abdomen, can have pulls via connective tissue all through the body causing pain to show up over the next 6 month onward.

This tissue is connected to other parts of the body and can start to pull on the low back and the hips, the diaphragm affecting breathing and up to the shoulders affecting the upper and middle back al of which can cause pain.

Her back or shoulder or chest  may start to hurt after 6 months or so and because the surgery was so long ago she doesn’t make the link. It doesn’t show up right away because it takes time for the new scar tissue and its new strains to pull things out of place.

There is a simple castor oil treatment you can do once the scar is fully healed that can help a lot and can help release the attachments as deep as the incision, all the way to the uterus and soften and ease the scar’s tissue pull overall. HOW TO: Just apply castor oil to the scar and cover it and place a heating pad or hot water bottle on it for 35-45 minutes every day for 21 days and I expect you’ll see a big difference in the scar!  This works for new and even very old scars .

And manipulative therapy can also help the scar and to put things back in place so that you can feel your very best :-) .

My back hurts why work on my foot?

03.10.10

This past week I have seen several clients with back pain and ankle issues and they or you if you have back pain may not have connected the two.

When I look at your body I am trying to figure out what caused your concern..most lesions are ascending (came from below; the  ankle or foot) or are descending and came from above (a blow from above; the head or shoulder etc.) and how it affects your body overall.

If I assess your back and treat your hip or sacrum or low back and it isn’t moving as expected I assess the head and feet and see where it might be coming form.

The 1 or 2 or 3 times you have stumbled and strained your ankle or sprained it or even broke it (ouch!)  and thought it didn’t matter long term…. well it may be the reason your back hurts. I often treat ankles and feet and voila the back/hip issue gets better, of course there are other parts to the session and I always integrate it with other parts of the body so things stay in their new places (which were their old correct places):-).

And I’d like to close by saying I enjoy working on feet with long term pain, bunions, arch issues etc. because it makes a big difference and can change someone’s life to walk pain free and I find so few practitioners I know want to or can work on feet :-) .

Blessings to all as always!

Some prose for my patients….

03.05.10

Here,

I come with my angels

Or perhaps it is the angels that bring me
I come with the angels and with these 2 hands
And a heart that seeks to be made of spirit gold
I come with these 2 hands – humbly thy servant
It is with these hands I ask the spirits to assist, to heal, to release,
to abandon that which is ready to let go
I come with a deep desire to heal, little more,
I pray each day to be more able to be most willing,
I come with a deep desire in my heart to heal and be healed and nothing more.
I ask that you forgive all else and know the pure intent behind these hands and heart. Amen.

Thank you to all of my patients for trusting me, I am blessed to have the opportunity to know each of you - thank you.

Postpartum Depression; Surprising Cause?

03.03.10

This topic is near and dear to my heart. I am obsessed with helping babies and new Mom’s have the best possible relationship they can have.  When new Mom’s have depression it can be heartbreaking and tragic for both Mom and baby.

From a traditional manipulative therapy perspective we know that the occiput (bone at back of the head) and the sphenoid (bone in middle of head) where the pituitary gland  (master gland that produces many important chemicals, hormones etc in body) is housed are directly connected to the sacrum. When a pregnant Mom carries her baby over time it can push the sacrum down, and during labor the contractions and actual birth can further push the sacrum out of place and this can be affected not only in natural birth situations but also with Mom’s who have c-sections.

If the sacrum is out of place the sphenoid can be pulled out of place and the pituitary may be affected so that critical chemicals like seritonin and other “happy” producing chemical production is off.  If the sacrum, occiput and sphenoid are adjusted we have seen new Mom’s who are experiencing post partum depression see their depression lift within in hours!  It isn’t the only piece of the puzzle however it can be the missing link :-) .

Hypo Vs Hyper: Why you might hurt!

03.02.10

In traditional osteopathic manipulative practice there is the concept of Hypo vs Hyper.

If something moves to much it is hyper  (over mover) mobile and tends to hurt when it is asked to over work. It is often asked to move to much because some other part of the body is hypo (under mover) mobile, and the hyper part thinks it has to take up the slack and move more.

If I can get the hypo (under mover) to move we find the hyper (over mover) stops over moving and starts to feel better! Often as I go to work on a part of the body a patient will say it doesn’t even hurt any more even though you haven’t touched it how can that be? I laugh and tell them it’s magic ;-) , and then explain this concept.

Wishing you a blessed day!

10 Excuses to Buy a Stainless Steel Water Bottle

Alicia Voorhies

ShareThis

1.  Avoid Extra Chemicals – there’s enough to worry about with rocket fuel and other hormone-disruptors already present in water, so you need to avoid the ones you have control over.

2.  Clean Taste – water from a stainless steel bottle just tastes better. Your drink keeps its flavor without the metal taste you can get with aluminum or plastic bottles.

3.  Less Bacteria – a study by Coffey Laboratories in Oregon showed that stainless steel bottles are naturally more bacteria resistant than plastic bottles.

4.  Saves Money – just think, if you typically buy one bottled water for $1 each day, a reusable stainless bottle will pay for itself about 3 weeks.

5.  Extra Long Life – you can use it anyway you like and it will stay in great shape for years. Most stainless steel bottles can be maintained much like a car – just replace the parts.

6.  Reduces Trash – you can change the growing horror story of the Plastic Sea by reusing your bottle. According to the NRDC, in 2005 two million tons of plastic water bottles ended up clogging landfills instead of being recycled.

7.  No More Guessing What’s in Your Water – with disposable bottled water, you don’t know the integrity of the plastic or what chemicals have leached into your water before you even buy it. To top it off, the quality of the water is basically unknown, as most bottled water comes from same the tap as your home. Bottled water companies don’t have to release their water-testing results to the public, but municipalities do.

8.  Great Functionality and Style – there’s a bottle perfectly suited to every need – backpackers, sports fanatics, soccer moms and construction workers alike.

9.  Keeps Drinks Cold – stainless steel offers the only truly insulated options in the world of water bottles. You can can add ice to your drink in the morning and it’ll still be there doing it’s job in the afternoon.

10. Serious Durability – stainless steel bottles may dent and scratch, but they don’t crack under pressure! Take a look at my water bottle below. It was run over by a Mack truck, and yet here it stands today.

Gratitude can change your life!

02.17.10

What are you grateful for? Do you think about this?

I am grateful for my family, my wonderful clients who teach me so much, my home, my community of friends, a car that gets me where I need to be,  and so many little things that I often take for granted like a yoga class that smells good (lol – last week a dog had diarrhea and the room smelled horrid!), more then 1 change of clothes etc.  When I do this, when I express gratitude for the smallest things I sometimes feel my entire being shift, and life changes in miraculous little ways :-)

As Sarah Ban  Breathnach says “You simply will not be the same person two months from now after consciously giving thanks each day for the abundance that exists in your life. And you will have set in motion an ancient spiritual law; the more you have and are grateful for, the more will be given you.”

My invitation to you is to express your gratitude daily for even the smallest things and see how your life shifts!

Help C-Section Babies Immune Systems!!

02.12.10

Traditional Osteopathic Manipulation can really help c-section babies in a simple way. When a baby is born vaginally its head passes through the birth canal and the pressure of the birth canal on the head activates something called the 4th ventricle. This is where cerebral spinal fluid is made. When this area is pressed on during birth the action forces the fluid to be more fully squeezed out into the brain and along the spine. This extreme squeeze helps activate the nervous system and the babies’ immune response.

There are stats that show c-section babies immune systems are less active then babies born vaginally because of this and when this technique is used within the first day (ideally) to month of a babies life it can make a difference in the babies overall nervous system and immune response :-) . A VERY simple way to help a c-section babies’ is the CV-4 technique – it only takes a few minutes and can make a huge difference!

Can you say “I feel so damn good today”

02.10.10

One of my patients called me before the new year and left me a voice mail saying “I feel so damn good I can hardly stand myself!” and no need to call back  she just wanted me to know.

This is music to my ears. When people ask me what I do it is hard to explain other then. How do I explain that I help people feel better, heal, and regain movement and ease in their bodies? My title is “Human Body Mechanic”.  When a client comes to me they usually have some pain, or limited range of movement or something that seems out of sync in some way and they are hoping I can help them heal.

This patient had come to me after a double mastectomy and in pain daily and unable to work out at the gym, go for long walks, or enjoy life to the fullest. She had a wide variety of complaints. I looked for areas of her body were out of sync, that were pulling her away from her center and sought to bring her back to her center. I worked on balancing her head/cranium with her sacrum/low back area and d to feel more alive, to have more energy to feel and look more vibrant.

My hope is that I have the opportunity to help many, many people heal so that  they have they can live fuller more vibrant lives – there is nothing better to me  then hearing someone tell me they feel “So damn good” they can hardly stand it!  Here’s hoping we all can!
